Psychiatric Elements in Buddhist Culture

Many psychiatric elements can be found in the Buddhist culture. It can be said that many Buddhists usually live under the guidance of religious cultures, which mainly deal with moral and morality. There is no doubt that one can find the way to overcome either mental or physical problem at the moment one follows and applies the following elements.

Observance of precepts is known as a psychiatric element. Buddhists occasionally preserve respective precepts such as five, eight or ten precepts in daily life. Morality is mainly connected with controlling verbal and physical actions. It is morality that can cure mentality. In the Sīlavīmamsaka Jātaka, it is said that Sīla is not only the best thing but also the highest (the noblest) one in the world. It is evident that a trained mind can bring happiness to all. The more you train your mind and body, the better you become. The world is burning with craving, hatred and ignorance. Then try to be calm in your mind and body with the help of morality praised by noble ones. What is important is not to think and do what is unwholesome. No doubt, if you do control your mind and body, you can lead a better life.

What is the easiest but the best way for all of us to feel relaxed is to go to religious buildings and to do what is good whenever we have got free time. It is a great treatment. Bhodhipūjā or something like sweeping, filling up waters and lighting in the pagoda-premises, is also taken as an effective element to reduce stress and worry or to treat mentality. In Sri Lanka, it plays an important role in the religious aspect. We can see many people take part in the Bhodhipūjā under the Bhodhi-tree, where they are sweeping or cleaning, filling up the pots with waters and lighting candles before praying or paying homage to the Lord Buddha. It is a really lovely life style in Sri Lanka that people young and old, are doing such good deeds known as Bhodhipūjā at respective temples in the evening. We can feel pleased with our actions at every moment we are taking part in good deeds. It is true that three aspects—morality, concentration and wisdom– are included in such good deeds called Bhodhipūjā. On doing it, mind can become calm and peaceful. because it is controlled and guided. No matter what you call or name it, but what you do will make you feel free from worry and anxiety when your actions are good and beneficial for all. If so, why don't we do what is good for all so that we can build a better society?

Then Reading Jataka stories can help one reduce stress. Reading religious stories is a good way to spend time, instead of thinking about bad things we have already done and good things we have not done yet. We can get a lot of knowledge and lessons which can be useful tools to deal with this and that problems being faced in day to day life. The more you read, the more you know. But just knowing is nothing but doing is something that can change your life. In Myanmar, reciting religious texts like Parittas and Paṭṭhāna is common to many Buddhists. Buddhists of Myanmar do many Paritta Recitation Ceremonies in their houses and work places. This is because they believe that they can get a lot of merit and feel a peace of mind. Hopefully, it is really helpful and fruitful. There is no doubt that many auspicious things come into our lives and thus we are free from bad kammic effects after reciting Preventative Discourses by virtuous monks. Don't forget that it is connected with reading that can make your mind still and calm. That is what we call concentration in basic level. As long as your mind is concentrated on good things, you are free from mental problems called worry and anxiety or more. And then Reciting Agulimāla Sutta is very famous in Buddhist countries. It is usually performed when women give birth to a baby. What is noteworthy is that we need to reflect the attributes of Thera Agulimāla or we have to swear to things we have done, when we recite it. We can get much benefit from the recitation only when our praying words are true. That is what we call Saccakiriya. We can see that this way of reciting is dealing with faith and reality. No doubt, faith can move mountains. It is then clear that such action can help us to get a good condition. It is good to remember that reading is cultivating your knowledge.

In fact, there are many interesting things in Buddhist cultures. Buddhists not only transfer their merits to all beings when they have done meritorious deeds but also rejoice in others’ meritorious deeds. It is believed that this is very important and helpful. Actually, ten meritorious deeds are considered as psychiatric elements in the Buddhist culture. They concern with social, economic and religious aspects as well. Paying due respect to the elder (Apacāyana) and helping the others’ good deeds (Veyyāvacca) are absolutely dealing with social affairs. Doing such things are unavoidable. We can clearly understand that straightening one’s views (diṭṭhizukamma) is vital on the way to a right position. That is what we have to try to possess because it can help one see the truth or cure mental disorder. One can achieve good results through these ten deeds. That is why many Buddhists usually participate in doing good deeds. It can be said that preaching dhamma and listening to Dhamma are good methods to attain spiritual development. By listening to Dhamma, one can reduce stress and attain mental development. Preaching is actually sharing knowledge with others whereas listening to Dhamma is acquiring a lot of knowledge. They are real methods to tame our minds. It is said in the Mangala Sutta that they are higher blessings. One who follows them can feel happy and healthy, by overcoming mental illness. Dhamma will look after the one who practices it. It is nature that good begets good. These are the reason why these elements are considered as the tools to cure mental problems and as the path to lead a better way of living.

What matters most is how you apply what you know. After that, there is another interesting psychiatric element called astrology, which is in the hearts of people today. It is also an effective method to teach people right from wrong. What we have got to do is to apply it as an instrument to treat mental problems, but not to use it as an encouragement to follow after it. According to different temperaments of people, different methods should be righteously used to lead people to a right way of thinking and living. We should apply it effectively. There can be different points of view whether this astrology can be Real element to treat mental problems. In my opinion, whether it is effective or not depends on whether you apply it righteously or not. Don't forget that you have full right to dispute with people, and vice versa. How you do and how much loving-kindness you put into your actions are more important than what you do and know or more.

As the last one, the rituals based on the Buddhist cultures can be considered as psychiatric elements. Buddhist people love doing rituals as a token of meritorious deeds. They are in the habit of doing good deeds on the religious days. In this way, they can accumulate a lot of merits and lead a better of living under the guidance of the Teachings. These elements can help people to overcome mental problems and to achieve mental development.

In conclusion, what I wanna say is that those who follow after those elements under the instruction of the Buddha’s teachings or who apply them righteously can overcome all mental problems. To deal with such and such problems, we can apply those psychiatric elements effectively. There is no doubt that they can help us cure mental diseases and develop spiritual progress.

A Special Guest or Gift for My Name on the M.A Result

''Hi, how is everything with you, buddy?', ''Hey, look, what are you doing now?', ''You know what is happening today?', a friendly voice came out of my little phone.

''Nothing special, guys', ''I am Just cooking for my lunch now'', ''Hey, by the way, what's your news'', I asked him, stirring dried fishes and tomatoes into the pot.

While thinking what to put in my special food next, there came out a cool and serious voice again, that made my heart beating like thunder at the moment I heard: ''Your result is out'', ''Go and see it, stop fussing__cooking and call us back''.

My heart started running like a horse. A flash of thought dealing with what to do then came into my mind after I hung off my phone. It is a call from my friend, U Pannyindriya, 2nd year student of B.P.U. I felt so much pleased with his thoughtful information.

It is natural that we comrades inform one another when we get news or something important. No doubt we share either good or bad things with one another. Sometimes, taking a joke or something funny on the phone with each other is a kind of fair and pure friendship based on honesty and kindness. It is a very lovely life style of our student life. Now it is clear that it was very helpful and important news for me.

I no sooner finished cooking than I started running into my room in order to take my monk-bag and things necessary. Hiring a Three-Wheel near by, I left for my University of Kelaniya. My eyes were looking for some friends on the way to University, hoping to see some guys I have got familiar with. When I found myself, my mind was being busy with reciting some Preventative Discourses (paritta). You see I am also just an ordinary guy who loves praying or reciting some religious texts like you when there arises important thing in life. Anyhow it can help our mind to become calm and still even though it is hard to say it can yield real good result. As for me, I do believe reciting some religious texts can pave the way for one to a good position as long as one keeps on doing it.
As soon as I arrived at University, I gave Three Wheel fares and went straight forward to the board where M.A results are declared. Can you guess what I was doing there at that time? If you were in my place, what do you usually do? Will you ask friends without seeing it by yourself or go straight forward to it? Yes, I approached to the board, with strong self-confidence. This is because I believe in myself.

My eyes and heart were earnestly co-operating then, pointing my little fingers on the board. As expected, my name is on the M.A Result. ''Oh, Yes, this is it'', "I've overcome this too'', I shouted repeatedly. But no one seemed to see and hear my victory smile and words. Of course, they could not hear nor were interested in me. I thought they beside me were so pitiful for not having a chance to see and hear such pleasant victorious smile and cry. My words were, in fact, thundering only in my heart filled with joy and excitement. Here what I did not know was that all of them were wearing a sweet smile and even shouting like me. This is actually the secret of victory. Now all pain is forgotten because gain called M.A result comes into my world. After scanning friends' names and taking some photos of the result, I came back to my temple, wearing a sweet smile and sleeping on it.

In my little room, a special guest or gift has been waiting for me for my congratulation. No doubt, I felt so much pleased with my guest. That was my poor salty curry___my lunch. Don't you think there could be my name appeared in my bowl of salty curry then? Needless to say that it is my special guest or gift for my name on the M.A Result in 2010.

Buddhist Psychotherapy Methods

In Buddhism, there are many effective methods of psychotherapy. By using them properly and wisely, one can solve the problems being faced in day to day life.

The first method is Apattidesana, which is usually translated as confession. It is mostly practiced by monks and nuns in Buddhism. If a monk or a nun committed a certain offense, he or she has to inform or confess it to the others with a promise not to commit such thing next time. This kind of confession is usually performed in the middle of Sangha when they assemble in the Ordination-Hall to recite the Disciplinary Rules, Patimokkha. This confession has to be done before reciting the Rules. Apart from such occasions, monks usually do such confessions at the time of paying homage to the Buddha and of any other Sangha assemblies. By declaring one’s offenses to someone, an easy and fresh thought comes into one’s mind. This is in fact a kind of honesty or sharing things with companions, without storing unnecessary things in the mind. It has been said that honesty is the best policy. Be honest not only in physical action but also in verbal and mental actions. This psychiatric theory is taken as a good method. There are many different points of view on this method among the young monks of today dealing with the fact that whether one can be free from one's faults by just reciting the Pali Words written for that point, without really putting it into action. Feeling guilty is so much connected with mentality, that plays an important role in building a better way of life here and hereafter. If one believes that confession can cure one's mental problem, then it can be so much effective that one can be free from mental disorder, that comes out of too much stress and worry. Anyhow, there is no doubt that confession can make one feel relaxed and refresh. Anyone who wants to be healthy and happy should apply this method.

The second one is imitation. This is also an important fact. According to situation, we have to do the imitation of others so that we can deal with them. The Buddha applied this method in association with Angulimala and Alavaka as well as Kisagotami. The Buddha, on preaching Dhamma to them out of compassion, accepted and listened to their words to some extent, thus explaining what is what step by step. Do you think it is possible for Him to teach them if He had neglected their points of view? It is clear that the Buddha paved the way for beings to real happiness, applying this imitation method righteously and effectively while he was teaching the Dhamma to people with different views from different backgrounds. We can apply this method in association with children, old people and patients or more so that we can walk along with them. Sometimes, we need to agree with people to keep going on even though we cannot accept their behaviour and outlooks. This is a kind of understanding or recognizing others' attitude. This is really necessary for all of us on the way to a good position or society. It is not reasonable for us to say, to listen to and to do only when we find things interesting and amazing. It is imitation that can create a good conversation and build a good relationship through having mutual understanding and evaluating one another. The third one is dialogue. Today, many people are demanding it in many places such as society, business world, educational fields, especially in politics. Friendly talking and discussion are very important to reach a right conclusion. The Buddha used this method in the Kasibharadvaja Sutta and Dhaniyagopala sutta and so on. The Buddha met and talked friendly with them to get along with them and to reach the target. Talking heart to heart is the best way to see the hearts of people. Using this method, one can get rid of many problems such as wrong views, social tensions and misunderstanding and so on. It can help one to ease his stress or anxiety or more.

The fourth method is noble silence. This is also what we should follow to reduce a lot of stresses. Keeping in noble silence is better than talking useless things, which create many problems. We should refrain from vain talk, harsh speech. The Buddha applied this method when the Sanghas were in dispute with Rules and Discourses. He went to the Palileyya-forest and stayed there without saying any more. Sometimes, the Buddha, on being asked to answer useless questions, kept in noble silence. The ten questions of whether the world is finite or infinite, etc, are left unanswered by the Buddha. Besides, the nature of the Buddha, Kamma, Jhana, and the world are also left unanswered by the Buddha for they are not dealing with the realization of the Truth. This is also because an ordinary one cannot even ponder over them. If they were answered, these answers might make people mad or more. Sometimes, the noble silence can be the key to deal with problem. The fifth method is generalization. This is the way of tackling many problems as well. This can be seen in the Jataka Stories in which Budhisatta is usually generalized to have faced many kinds of problems: economic, political, social problems and so on. Through explaining that such a higher person had to faced them, one can understand vicissitudes and get satisfied with one’s life. Understanding that this is the nature of the world one can reduce mental problems. This can be used through psycho-analysis, which is a very useful method as well.

Sometimes, we need to use the method of showing kammic effect, giving the example of Petavatthu and Vimanavatthu, which are dealing with Kamma. In the present life, one has to reap what one has sowed in the past. It is necessary to talk and console a patient who is in grief with such a kammic theory. It is better to know there is goodness and badness in everyone. When one gets into trouble due to the bad kamma, there is nothing else except cultivating or developing what is good through donation, morality and meditation. Next, there comes right motivation that is what all of us need to have. This right motivation method is essential whatever we do. Where there is no right motivation, there cannot be a right development. Ven. Nanda could overcome his attachment to his ex-wife through the right motivation given by the Buddha. What is important is not to demotivate a patient while giving right motivation. Try not to forget that your real encouragement can change a downhearted one into a strong -minded one. After that, innocent punishment should be put into practice. This method is clear in the story of Channa, who was given an innocent punishment. With the help of it, he attained Arantship. However, innocent punishment does not mean neglecting one. This should be tackled carefully. In the case of children, we should ask them to read books and do homework or more. If possible, we can ask them to practice meditation for a short time as a way of innocent punishment. This will be different from one another according to situation. Finally, what we have got to do is to use the method of praising, which is an urgent demand today. The Buddha used this method in the case of Ven. Ananda. The Buddha praised him saying thus, ‘You have done a lot of meritorious deeds.’ In so many discourses, we can find such praise of the Buddha to monks who are worthy of it. It is a sort of honor everybody needs. This is what we need to follow. We have to recognize others' ability as they really are. There is no good effect by neglecting one’s ability, but many good results can come from praising one when necessary.

These useful methods of Buddhist psychotherapy can be applied to reduce stress and solve mental problems in day to day life. These methods have a great beneficial influence on the way of thinking and living. There are many effective methods if you know how to apply. Do it now, that is the best time.

Fundamentals of Buddhist Psychotherapy

In the Buddhist psychotherapy, it is stated that there are many fundamentals. Lobha, Dosa and Moha are considered as the basic factors of mental problems in day to day life. At the moment one’s mind is too much overwhelmed with such unwholesome thoughts, his mind becomes impure and thus he becomes unhappy and unhealthy. We can see many people who are full of grief because of strong desire for material things. In the Buddhist psychotherapy, it is considered that too much unwholesome consciousness can put one into the terrible trouble. By reducing them, one can be in the condition of healthy body and happy mind. This is the reason why we should eliminate them in order to gain the real happiness.

It is natural that what is unwholesome arises in ordinary people. In Visuddhimagga, it is said that there are six characteristics of people. They are Lobha (Raga), Dosa, Moha, Saddha, Buddhi and Vitakka. When they arise positively, they are good for us, but when they arise negatively, they become very dangerous for us like a poisonous snake. It is stated in the Visuddhimagga that Lobha character is similar to Saddha character, Dosa character to Buddhi character and Moha character to Vitakka character. But it doesn’t mean exactly the same to each other. We can see from these that they also have positive aspects. Positive way of thinking and doing is what we need in daily life for it brings happiness. Actually all worldly beings are patients who are suffering from mental diseases such as strong greed, bitter hatred, and delusion. Actually, a patient is nothing but a group of five aggregates. As long as five aggregates belong to us, we can’t escape from either physical disease or mental disease. Any attachment to them can cause one to feel mental disease, but meditation on them can lead one to the Ultimate Goal of Buddhism. Ven. Nanda could eradicate mental problem when he meditated on them under the instruction of the Buddha. At the moment one can reduce or eliminate the attachments to material things with the help of non-greed, non-hatred and non-delusion, one can be free from mental diseases. No doubt, psychological problems are related to greed, hatred and delusion. Anyone who wants to destroy mental problems has to develop non-greed, non-hatred and non-delusion. Similarly, one has to generate these characters—Saddha, Buddhi and Vitakka through right methods.

The best way to overcome the problems is to develop morality, concentration and wisdom. With the aid of Sila, Samadhi and Panna, mental problems can be eliminated. It is true that we can reject bad things temporarily, timely and completely with the help of morality, concentration and wisdom. In fact, such rejects are called temporary rejection, Tadangapahana, timely rejection, vikkhambhanapahana and completely rejection, Samuccheda pahana. By explaining the nature of the world through Four Noble Truths, one can remove mental disease to some extent. What’s more, to attain a happy and healthy way of living, Ahara is considered as an important factor. There are four kinds of food according to Buddhism. Mental food is more important than material foods. This is a kind of mental support. It is evident that just as material food is important, so also, mental food is essential on the way to happiness. This is why they are considered as vital factors of the fundamentals.

Then, cause and effect theory of Kamma is also considered as a basic aspect in Buddhist psychotherapy. If one were suffered from the bad kammic action, one would not be cured. To cure that problem is to develop one’s good kamma by doing what is good. And kamma can be used as a tool to console one when in bad condition. Because of Kamma, people are different from one another not only in social status but also in education standards and so on. In the commentary on Sabbasavasutta, it is said that Dassana and Bhavana are very important factors. Through understanding and meditation, we can overcome all kinds of problems. On taking care of a patient, it is also necessary to apply behavioral therapy. It can be seen in the story of Padacari who was full of grief due to the losses of her son and husband. The Buddha asked her to look for a mustard-seed from a house where no one died. By walking and asking it from door to door, she became aware of the nature of birth and death and finally understood it. This is indeed how the Buddha gave her a behavioral therapy. Then, Sila, Smadhi and Panna together with other things mentioned above, can be used as a tool of Buddhist psychotherapy. We may interpret Sila as behavioral therapy and Samadhi as mental therapy and Panna as cognitive therapy in order to cure such and such problems. They must be used according to suitable situation. In fact, these three cannot be separated from one another. They are interrelated.

In conclusion, by practicing and developing all of them methodically, one can escape from mental problems, and finally these fundamentals will lead one to the attainment of real happiness, Nibbana.
